I went the former route as I had a lot of software and some keys I couldn't find anymore for some of the software. However, you could also just install Windows XP in a virtual Machine and restore a backup from your old PC or just re-install all your Windows XP specific programs, your choice. ![]() Doing this will cost you some money as you need to purchase a professional version to have that capability. I mentioned that I used Acronis Backup & Restore to restore my old PC backup directly to a Virtual Hard Drive. So I might have 2 Virtual Machines running at the same time and my Windows 7 PC all from the same box. I also run Ubuntu 11 (Unix) in a virtual machine. I suggest before you do this that you have plenty of RAM as you will allocate some to your Virtual Machine and use the rest with Windows 7. Now it operates on my Windows 7 machine just like it did on my other machine (but faster). So I really have two different XP machines, the one that came with Windows 7 Ultimate and my old XP machine I used for years. ![]() I finally backed up the entire PC with Acronis Backup software and restored it directly to a Virtual Machine Hard Drive which is actually just a file. I had another XP Computer I used for Programming with Visual Studio 6 etc. If you use VirtualBox (which is free and good I run Windows 8 preview with it, Ubuntu and DOS 6) you will also need to use your own validation code. ![]() If you get Professional or Ultimate it comes with a new license for Windows XP too. Nickam: With Windows 7 Home Premium you will need to use your own existing validation key for Windows XP (You will have to retire your old PC).
